The General Facts:

There were an estimated 6,289,000 car accidents in the US in 1999. There were about 3.4 million injuries and 41,345 people were killed in auto accidents in 1999.

An average of 115 persons die each day in motor vehicle crashes in The United States -- one every 13 minutes.

What to do if your are in a Car Accident:

If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident, you probably have immediate concerns and questions about your medical bills and your loss of income while you recover from your injuries.

Will you have permanent problems resulting from your injuries? Will you recover from your injuries sufficiently to be able to return to work?

Car accidents involve the unique provisions of Insurance Law. It is important to know your legal rights and contact a lawyer if you have been seriously injured in a car accident.

It is imperative that car accident victims understand that the other driver's insurance company, as well as your company may have interests that are adverse to your own. You should not speak to any representative from any insurance company without first consulting with an attorney.

Rules of Conduct at the Accident Scene:

Don't leave the scene of the accident. (If you don't stop for an accident you may be subject to criminal prosecution.)
Remain at the scene of the accident and have other who have witnessed the occurrence immediately contact the police.

Many people, even when they feel pain, will refuse medical attention at the scene and travel home. Then, after several
hours of increasing pain, they will finally go to the hospital and present themselves at the emergency room. When their
case reaches court, this delay in seeking medical attention is often used against them as a weapon to prove that the
accident did not cause the injury. If you feel pain at an accident scene and an ambulance is offered, utilize
the ambulance services to go immediately to the closest emergency room.

Exchanging Information with the Other Driver:

a. Obtain the following information with the other driver: name, address, telephone number, driver's license number,
name of insurance company, and immediately call the Police also, get the information of those who witnessed the accident.

b. Names of passengers, including their address and phone number;

c. Names of witnesses with address and phone number; and

d. Names of the owner, if not the driver, including address, phone number, insurance company, and policy number.
